Mann, Can You Read?!”
Ahhh... the highly anticipated summer break is finally upon us. Whether you’re traveling miles away or relaxing together at home, it’s the ideal time for families to recharge and reconnect.
Also, it’s a great time for students to read for the pure pleasure of it – without the pressure of time constraints or looming assignments. Reading during the summer months is a great way to increase fluency and sharpen previously learned literacy skills. Conversely, those students who do not read can easily slip backward with decreased reading proficiency.
In an effort to combat this “summer slide,” we encourage all rising 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students to participate in Mann’s summer reading program.
1. Decline or decrease
2. Slip or skid
Read books! Use the list for the grade you are entering.
Complete either the fiction or nonfiction book report form after reading the book.
The reading lists and the book report forms can be found at this link--Summer Reading Packet with Book List.
Upon returning to school in August, turn in all completed forms to your English teacher.
Each form is equal to one chance for the grand prize, so the more books you read the more chances you have to win!
All participants will receive some type of a reward incentive!

Whether it be our rich history, diverse student population, unique offerings in the arts and science disciplines, competitive athletic programs, or our highly trained staff of educational professionals, Horace Mann Magnet offers something for everyone.
Our faculty understands the challenges that face middle-school students. The transition from elementary school can be intimidating. Conversely, preparing for high school can be equally as daunting. Large student populations, greater freedom of choice, and high expectations of academic acheivement are some of the issues that students will face.
Our mission is simple: create a culture that is conductive for learning, challenge our students and let them thrive. Our expectations are high. Our standards are unwaivering. If you choose Mann Magnet, you choose to follow the principles that we hold dear.
For more information or to schedule a school visit, please contact our administrative offices. We hope to see you soon.
